Summer Read

Ah, summer. The perfect time to read a good book. Our Club-wide Summer Read is:

Jill Ker Conway's The Road from Coorain.

in remembrance of Smith's seventh and first woman president, we are reading the first of her autobiographical books. Of course, you can read them all if you want, but we'll start here. Former president  Conway tells the story of her journey into adulthood—a journey that would ultimately span immense distances and encompass worlds, ideas, and ways of life that seem a century apart.

We'll read it individually in July and schedule discussion group(s) and on-Facebook discussion questions in August. Pack this book in your bag for the cabin, beach or patio and get reading!

Winter Read

Oh, it is cold out there! What better time to curl up with a classic book by a Smith author? Not only is it a classic, it’s also been a banned book and is about to be a major motion picture opening on March 9th. Piqued your interest? Our Winter Read is:

Madeleine L’Engle ‘41
A Wrinkle in Time

This author hold a special place in my memory. Madeleine L'Engle spoke at my Smith College graduation with a message that really resonated with me. Whether you’ve read this book before or are new to it, read it now! It is a intriguing young adult fantasy with a strong female characters. It’s also a great mother/daughter read. Read the book and then, if you want, see the movie when it opens. We will host a discussion group on the book in the Twin Cities in late February/early March and another after viewing the movie in mid to late March. We may even arrange a group viewing of the film. If you can’t come to any of these groups, feel free to gather some of your Smith friends where you are and dig into the story.

So, pull up an arm chair, wrap yourself in a warm throw and get reading!
