Smith Day 2018

Smith Day 2018 was out of this world and in the stars. On October 19th we “eclipsed” our past daytime Smith Days and celebrated at night in Saint Paul’s new Bell Museum. The Museum has a planetarium with a 16-meter aluminum dome with “seamless” technology, the first of its kind in the world.

We had a delicious range of appetizers from Chowgirls Killer Catering and a cash bar that was buzzing as we kicked off the evening. As alums and their guests roamed around they avidly bid on our wonderful Silent Auction items gathered by mother-daughter team Stephanie Ross ’86 and Emily Upin ’16. The Book Swap, run by Yvie Yao ’17, offered some awesome titles that allowed those who participated to leave with a fun new read. Another wonderful activity that highlighted the night was the photo booth with lovely hand-made stellar-themed props put together by Emily Beck ’10. The evening also featured celestial viewing on the Observation Deck, aided by high-powered telescopes and astronomers who helped us track the stars and planets.

The main event of the night—the presentation of the Smith College Club of Minnesota Medal of Distinction—honored Catherine Farrington Haukedahl ’74 for her outstanding achievements in law as, among numerous other posts, Executive Director of Mid-Minnesota Legal Assistance, from which she retired last year. The evening closed with a narrated, private viewing of the cosmos in the beautiful new planetarium.

We look forward to seeing you at our next Smith Day!
